The bastards are dropping like flies. A string of victories have been won this week as people at the sharp end of austerity have shown that we don’t need giant trade unions or insincere political parties to do politics for us.
In East London, property developers Redrow have announced they are selling their £46.75m stake in 1 Commercial Street, the luxury tower block in East London. This building has been the target of an 18 week campaign against the ‘poor doors’ which force people in the so-called affordable properties to use a different entrance to those living in the posh flats. Rowdy weekly demonstrations have brought chaos to this busy part of London and enjoyed huge local support. The protests are set to continue with a victory celebration next Wednesday 19th November from 6pm.
Meanwhile in Hackney the tenants on the New Era estate have driven the vile Benyon family to sell their investment in the estate where residents have been threatened with huge rent hikes. This decision followed a lively protest when hundreds of people marched on the Benyon Estate offices and served a mock eviction on the company which is co-owned by Tory MP Richard Benyon – believed to be Britain’s richest elected politician. Suddenly London’s property market is not looking like such a lucrative investment as everywhere people are starting to organise against soaring rents, gentrification, social segregation and evictions.*
A stunning triumph against workfare has also taken place in Liverpool where the city’s branch of the IWW Union had called a demonstration against the use of workfare by council sub-contractors Bulky Bobs. Not only did the threat of this protest cause the organisation to pull out of unpaid work and agree to sign the Keep Volunteering Voluntary agreement, but they have also issued one of the strongest statements yet against Jobcentre workfare schemes. Quoted on the Liverpool IWW website, Bulky Bobs say: “We are happy to support Liverpool IWW in their efforts to persuade the DWP to scrap Workfare and would urge any other business involved in the scheme to withdraw at once.”
Resistance to forced work has been strong in Liverpool, with regular protests being held and volunteer agencies in the city condemning workfare. Liverpool Council have also pledged to boycott George Osborne’s Help To Work scheme which forces claimants to work for six months without pay or face losing meagre benefits. Liverpool could soon become the first workfare free city, which would be pretty fucking funny given that Merseyside contains the constituency of Employment Minister Esther McVey.
There was a further victory against workfare in Motherwell after LAMH Recycling also announced they would be ending their involvement with the scheme. This social enterprise hit the headlines after local unemployed man John McArthur had his benefits stopped for refusing to work without pay at the organisation where he had previously been a paid employee. John had held weekly protests outside the company leading to them finally withdrawing from forced labour. Following the announcment McArthur took to twitter to thank the “extraordinary kindness of people whom I have never met but who have contacted me offering assistance. They keep alive the true spirit of charity, i.e caritas (love), and giving without seeking a fee (or free labour)”.
Finally a resurgent Class War, who also instigated the Poor Doors protests, chased Iain Duncan Smith across his leafy Chingford constituency yesterday. Unfortunately they didn’t manage to catch the bastard but they did discover that the only way he could get people to attend his self-publicising jobs fair was to threaten to take their benefits away if they didn’t show up. Pitiful.
At times it feels like the onslaught of shit is relentless. But these events show that when we fight back we can win. Don’t wait for political parties, the TUC or the growing band of celebrity lefties to tell you what to do. Find a weak spot, organise, and kick it till it fucking breaks.
*UPDATE: 16/11/14 The tenants are reporting on twitter that Westbrook Partners who now control the estate are now threatening them with eviction. Follow the campaign @newera4all for the latest news.

The only time the Government is going to give in is if they know they are wrong, so what does that say about most of their decisions of late. They come up with ideas that are bloody useless and only affect the poor working class people. When will we get a government that has the balls to do what’s right here and in Europe.
Someone commented about Human Rights….. well the government do not know what Human Rights are as they just pick and choose the parts of the Human rights act that they want to follow and sod the rest…the IMPORTANT parts of the act.

DWP admits investigating 60 benefit-related deaths since 2012

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has carried out 60 secret reviews into benefit-related deaths in less than three years, Disability News Service (DNS) can reveal.
DWP released the figures in response to a series of Freedom of Information Act (FoI) requests by DNS.
It said in one response that DWP had carried out “60 peer reviews following the death of a customer” since February 2012.

DWP management target disabled benefit claimants.
Over the next 24 hours DWP management will ‘invite’ close on 2,000 benefit claimants from Birmingham to attend interviews, with a goal of getting at least 10% off the benefit register.
The group of benefit claimants being targeted are in the majority waiting for assessments to decide if they are able to be deemed ‘fit for work’. (The assessment formerly and controversially run by ATOS). Those waiting assessments are often disabled or vulnerable adults.
The ‘invitation’ letter issued makes no suggestion that the attendance to these interviews is purely voluntary, indeed DWP staff in Birmingham (and Central England) have been advised verbally and by email from management to keep it to themselves that attendance to these interviews is not mandatory. One manager in a city based office was overheard saying that the way to deal with these claimants is to ‘hassle, hassle them off benefit’.
Andrew Lloyd, PCS Midlands regional secretary that represents DWP staff said, “It is outrageous that the DWP are duping the most vulnerable by issuing this letter, and then worse still setting a target to get those off benefits, it could be argued that this approach is unlawful. Our members are totally opposed to this approach but are faced with inferred disciplinary action unless they act upon these targets.”

If you receive one of these letters, or if you receive a letter about Work Focussed Interviews while you are in the support group YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ATTEND and they cannot stop your benefits if you don/t attend.

A DOUBLE amputee died in an apparent suicide fewer than 48 hours after being told an allowance to pay his carer was being slashed by two thirds, his sister claims.
Mark Cotton, 54, had lost both his legs due to a medical condition and relied on paid help which had been agreed with the authorities.
But he was visited for a re-assessment and four days later received a telephone call to say the allowance for paid care was being cut from nine hours a week to only three.
Fewer than 48 hours later he was found dead at his home in Sevenoaks Mead, Allerton, Bradford, after apparently taking an overdose of the painkillers he needed because of his illness.
His sister Jjeneen Sherington said he had left a note and hit out: “They are the cause of his death in my eyes.
“He would still have been here if this hadn’t happened”.
Mr Cotton lost one leg in 2010 and returned to work in a teaching role after that but his deteriorating health meant his remaining leg was amputated in 2012.
Even before the second amputation he had needed care and Jjeneen was paid for nine hours a week, though said in reality she spent more time assisting him and could not work as a result.
“When he was told he was being re-assessed he thought because his circumstances were worse, they might give him more money.
“Then they phoned to say they were reducing his money,” she said.
That worked out as a reduction in paid for care from nine to three hours a week, she said, and during his re-assessment interview, Mark had been asked if he could do his own ironing while sitting down, one of the tasks normally done by his sister.
“We were going to fight the decision, through Citizens’ Advice and his MP,” she said.
“He had loved his work and wanted to get back to a job. He had put himself through university and had started a course to learn a foreign language in the hope of being able to teach that, but his health meant he had to give it up.
“He had always worked and put into the country, but this was what he got back.
“The paramedics said he must have been in a lot of pain, because of the medication he had been given,” she said.
A spokesman for Bradford Council said: “We are aware of the tragic death of Mr Cotton, who was known to Bradford Adult Services, and our thoughts are with his family.
“Investigations will be carried out into the circumstances of this case and it would be inappropriate to comment until those investigations have been completed,” he said.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed that a 54-year-old man was found dead after a call was made for an ambulance at 8.17am on Thursday, with no suspicious circumstances.

The Saint Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) are still in denial however, claiming that they don’t use any mandated labour, which is a lie, they do. I know someone who is mandated to work in their Bradford furniture warehouse full-time for 6 months for no wage and under direct threat of Sanctions.
Shame how money corrupts…. going back a few decades a go the St Vincent De Paul were a genuine charity. I remember them delivering food parcels and stuff to my widowed mum… even though she hated the Pope 😀

They may still be a genuine charity and probably do some good for someone but it seems contradictory to their ethic of helping the poor, and in the case of Saint Vincent slaves in particular, whilst they are happy to *exact work or service from people under the threat of a penalty and for which the person has not offered himself or herself voluntarily*, which under any other circumstances would constitute Slavery, as is defined by the UN International Labour Organization (ILO).

We have proved that we can win but we haven’t won enough, nor have we fought enough. We’ve had 4+ years to beat the coalition and bring the government down yet we haven’t! If the tories get voted in again then it’s our own faults for allowing it in the first place.
It’s still (sadly) early days, but if Universal Credit comes in it will affect many, many poor workers who rely on Working Tax Credits and Housing Benefit to top up starvation wages. This will affect all those currently working for the likes of Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and other major supermarket chains – all of who pay a ‘competetive’ wage (so competetive that they won’t state what it is) that is pennies above the minimum wage, if you’re lucky. At present those workers are complacent and possibly even hostile to unemployed people, but once they really start to be affected by the changes many of them may be receptive to ideas that could lead to a change. Already Walmart, (owners of Asda) workers in the USA are showing how poor, underpaid workers are taking a lead in agitating for improved wages, demanding a minimum wage of $15 an hour:

Of course, many workers may remain cowed, especially those mis-lead by unions like USDAW (the main retail union in the UK) who are little more than a bosses’ union (Tesco even send USDAW shop stewards on their management course, and in some senses enthusiastic involvement in union affairs is fast-track to management). But remaining cowed and inactive won’t pay the bills, and subject to the conditionality imposed by Universal Credit, many will find themselves sanctioned.
This government, and the regime in general, (and I include all the mainstream political parties in my definition of the ‘regime’, they are all scum) seems to be on a heading towards the crushing of the poor – this is very dangerous stuff, for them: in 1789 conditions for the poor became so bad, as they were increasingly screwed to support the rich that they revolted and revolution resulted. In 1917 Russian soldiers and workers revolted and soviets, or worker’s councils took over, ending the oppressive Romanov regime. Both revolutions went bad, and merely replaced one ruling elite with another, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
There is only one candidate to support in the next general election, and that’s your local Class War candidate.
Workers seeking out a decent union that will reflect their concerns and act only in their interests need look no further than the Industrial Workers of the World, the Wobblies.

The words have no meaning like a Disability spokesperson said, no I said Stepping Razor said. Until the DWP name themselves I will send a Cease & desist letter to the whole DWP to put the whole DWP on hold in litigation. ££££ Millions lost. Now with no threats DWP who is your spokesperson? This week, DWP also released guidance used by its staff to decide whether a peer review was necessary, and guidance for authors of a peer review.
This reveals that the role of a review is to “determine whether local and national standards have been followed or need to be revised/improved”, while a review must be carried out in every case where “suicide is associated with DWP activity”.
It also says that peer reviews might also be considered in cases involving “customers with additional needs/vulnerable customers”.
As with previous FoI requests by DNS and many other disabled campaigners, DWP refused to answer some of the questions because it claimed that it planned to publish information itself “in due course”

Dear Department for Work and Pensions,
Please can you provide me with the 60 reports written on the peer
reviewed case’s of customer deaths as mentioned in the Disability
News Service article titled “DWP admits investigating 60 benefit
related deaths since 2012”. This piece was published on 14th
November 2014.
I have no objection to names and locations being changed in the
reports to protect individuals data. But I do ask that the change
is consistent accross all 60 reports. For example if Liverpool is
mentioned in 10 of the 60 reports and you change Liverpool to
Manchester or city 1 in one of the reports please be consistent
with this change in all 60 reports, so although the location is not
known it can be seen if the same location is repeatedly reported
upon.

Twelve Marbles
Imagine a large church hall. It is 8am, and twelve unemployed people are standing six to a side, holding carefully between them, three long pieces of white plastic drainpipe. They have overlapped these pieces, to make a single length. It is pointed downwards at a slight angle, towards an empty bucket on the floor.
In front of the group stands an ex-member of the special forces, wearing camouflage trousers and t-shirt. He does not look pleased. But this may simply be his ‘killing-face.’
On the small wooden table placed by his side is a glass bowl. It looks like a fruit bowl. But instead of fruit it contains twelve marbles. Each of the participants has been given a number, and this enables the special forces man to shout ‘’Number 1, Number 2, Number 3’’, as required. He is the only one that will speak, for military discipline has been imposed, and no talking is permitted during this exercise.
The command is given, and Number 1, an ex-teacher in her fifties, leaves her place in the group, comes forward, and takes a marble from the bowl on the table. She is carefully observed by the special forces man, who makes notes on a clipboard he is holding. With great concentration, Number 1 approaches the upper end of the drainpipe, holding the marble as instructed, between thumb and first finger. She places it on the edge of the drainpipe, and gently releases it.
The marble runs noisily down the plastic pipe, and falls with a plonk into the bucket. Success ! Number 1 returns to her place in the line.
Now it’s the turn of Number 2, an unemployed bank clerk in his thirties. He looks nervous, he fumbles for the marble, and drops it, wasting time. The special forces man makes a note on his clipboard. This isn’t good. If Number 2 fails to reach the required standard on the exercise he will have to do it again and again, until he can pick up the marble correctly. If he persistently fails to reach the required standard, he will be sanctioned for non co-operation with a provider. Nervously, Number 2 approaches the upper end of the drainpipe, but he is still not holding the marble correctly, he is using two fingers and a thumb. One finger too many.
The special forces man unfortunately has seen this, with his sniper’s vision, and makes another note.
Number 2 releases the marble, it runs noisily down the plastic pipe, and falls with a plonk into the bucket. Two down, and only another four hours to go !
